G.I. Joe: The Movie
This is a good theater version of the hit TV show. The opening to this movie is a fantastic firefight between Cobra and G.I. Joe on the statue of liberty. The remixed version of their opening song is played triumphantly when the Joe's fight. This has to be one of the greatest introductions to a movie I have ever seen.
The plot is pretty much the same as the cartoon. Cobra wants to take over the world, so they plan to get a new weapon called the B.E.T. (Broadcast Energy Transmitter) Cobra Commander is finally forced out of Cobra and Serpentor is on a mission to use the BET to release pods to turn the entire world population in primitives.
It features voices of some famous actors: Lt. Falcon (Don Johnson), Golobulus (Burgess Meredith), and Sgt. Slaughter.
Most of this movie is too familiar with the cartoon and doesn't stand out on enough of a level as a big screen movie. Although it does feature some excellent visuals that were not common in most cartoons in the 80s. The cartoon simply is not on the level as Transformers: The Movie, in my honest opinion.
Final word, it's still a solid cartoon movie of an incredible TV series. G.I. Joe in general is more about fighting for one's freedom, against an evil regime hell-bent on conquering the world. Which can be seen in many other films, cartoons and non cartoons alike. I recommend this for hardcore cartoon/G.I. Joe fans. Buy this on VHS or DVD, the DVD contains the old public service announcements that used to play at the end of the shows!
G.I.JOE : A REAL AMERICAN HERO
This five-part mini-series introduced the world to what would become (at least in our opinion) the best cartoon ever put on TV. All the ingredients which would become the hallmarks of the series were in place: superb animation, a wide array of complex heroes and villains, fervent patriotism and, most importantly, non-stop action.
In their first of countless conflicts with the terrorist organization Cobra, the G.I. Joe force--Duke, Scarlet, Lady Jaye, Snake Eyes, et al--face arms dealer Destro's nefarious MASS device. Their battle takes them around the world in a desperate race to retrieve the three elements which power MASS, from the frigid Arctic to the ocean floor. The showdowns are awesome and incessant, right up to the final assault on Cobra Commander's hidden temple.
G.I. JOE: THE REVENGE OF COBRA
This is the miniseries that, really defined G.I. Joe, with Flint, Lady Jaye, Zartan, the Dreadnoks, Roadblock, Shipwreck, Mutt, and Junkyard appearing for the first time. Excellently animated (as always), this series had all the action and humor of MASS Device, and then some. A great place to begin viewing the saga of G.I. Joe!
